Jane Newman, Acrylic
Jane Newman, captures “Glimpses of Glory” with paint! Jane’s work is typically representational 2-D acrylic and oil paintings focusing on the interaction of shape against shape, value against value, and how the shadow defines the light, each producing vibrations on the canvas. Her most recent body of work depicts shiny reflective surfaces, and “table-scapes” of local eateries or popular libation hang-outs as seen in her new series “Happy Hour”. One of her best friends and patrons commented recently that she, “Liked Jane’s still-life paintings because they were not still, they have lots of movement”. Utilizing layers of underpainting to create surface texture, Newman’s style is evolving as she introduces the use of untraditional tools beyond the paint brush. Workshops with Spanish painter, Carlos San Milan, influence her paint application and vision; demonstrations with Dreama Perry inspire color and underpainting; while lectures with Nan Cunningham motivate her initial approach to the blank canvas. By using palette knives and other objects of varying sizes, shapes, and designs, Newman creates images that simultaneously can be viewed as abstract and hyperrealism depending on the viewers position. She explains, “I begin by blocking in the masses of value in bright colors to be used like a map to then build layers allowing the underpainting to peak through, refining details as the painting progresses.” Jane’s work is represented by Reflections Gallery and In-Town Gallery in Chattanooga, TN and at the Museum5Points gift shop in Cleveland, TN. She also teaches art lessons in after-school programs for at-risk children, and private lessons in painting and drawing at Art Creations art supply store in Chattanooga. She and her husband reside in Ooltewah, TN.
